Modernizing the Project Tree Plugin for Redmine 6

Challenge

In very large Redmine instances, the default project view can become slow and overloaded. A plugin from 2019 addressed this, but it was no longer compatible after upgrading to Redmine 6 / Rails 7.

Approach

I performed a full technical rework while preserving core behavior:

  • updated plugin structure and registration
  • modernized routing and lazy-loading paths
  • refactored controllers and permissions checks
  • cleaned up views and asset integration
  • improved JavaScript behavior for expand/collapse and lazy loading
  • consolidated icons/resources in a consistent asset system

Snapshot

  • Industry: Software development / project management
  • Time frame: 2025
  • Technologies
    • Ruby on Rails (Redmine 6)
    • jQuery / AJAX
    • SVG sprite / asset pipeline
    • Redmine plugin architecture

The updated plugin restores fast, maintainable project-tree navigation and remains upgrade-compatible for future Redmine releases.
