Security and Risk Assessment for a Parent App

Challenge

An educational institution planned to use a cloud-based parent communication app that processes children’s personal data. Before rollout, an independent technical and privacy assessment was required.

Approach

I conducted a structured assessment covering technical, organizational, and legal dimensions:

  • review of security architecture (access controls, encryption, logging, permissions)
  • evaluation of supplier claims and certification reliability
  • analysis of third-party integrations and potential data leakage risks
  • GDPR-oriented legal baseline checks
  • definition of practical minimum controls (for example MFA and password policy)
  • transparent communication materials for stakeholders

Outcome

The assessment enabled a constructive discussion and informed decision-making. Instead of stopping the initiative entirely, the institution continued with an open process and evaluated safer, more sovereign alternatives.

Snapshot

  • Industry: Education and social services
  • Time frame: 2025
  • Engagement: Voluntary
  • Topics
    • IT security and risk analysis
    • Privacy and GDPR
    • Cloud security and trust management
    • Parent communication and sensitive data

The result created transparency and a better foundation for a sustainable and secure communication solution.
